At first sight Thomas Schrenk's shreds seem to be classic abstract compositions. Shreds are usually seen as a form of waste but Schrenk shows us their true colours. The shreds, that are used to clean the brushes between strokes, have been cut to different sizes, stretched, and now exist as an artwork on their own.
The abstract painting, with its potential or hidden, extensive meaning and supposedly spiritually charged, yet highly decorative aesthetics, questions tradition, craftsmanship, and perceived talent. The shreds are sold as art and display a capitalistic logic of efficiency, grabbing our attention and telling us: even in art, the goal is to make money from waste.
