Through the capturing of seemingly archaic design elements the forever existing wish for spiritual introspection and reorientation is emphasized. On the other hand, a contrast is set towards the contemporary environment, which often disregards such aspirations, leaving little space for utopian views and characterizing them as “unhealthy.”
The installations remind us that the present must first be overcome so that a better future can be achieved. This utopia can technically not be reached, since it is always newly projected towards the future, creating an endless cycle. The visitors are invited to reflect upon their scope of influence, and as a sign of willingness to leave behind the past, offer a small gift (coins, flowers, small objects) in front of the epitaph.
Martin Gerstenberg was born 1981 in Landhut, Germany and studied communication design at FH (college) Augsburg. In his works he connects elements of street art and outsider art with traditional elements of painting and sculpting. The diverse energy and history of different art forms are experimentally condensed in his works to pursue cultural Up-Cycling.
