Erratic Sanctuary

2017

The image of Medusa is characterized by a paradox both as a mythical creature that turns people into stone, and in the magic it activates, resulting from a combination of beauty and terror. Her head was used in ancient times as an apotropaic mask - a kind of amulet to ward off evil influences.

In the work Erratic Sanctuary the image of Medusa is revisited. Another paradox is the fishing net is caught in itself creating a new figure, a medusa or jellyfish, which floats in the air as a charm or protective shield.

Pia Pedersen was born in 1986 in Denmark. Pedersen works with recycled materials, such as industrial fishing equipment and aluminium. She studied Sculpture and Installation at “the Fine Arts Academy of Vienna” and “Glasgow School of Art”. Currently she lives and works in Viborg, Denmark.
