SAR are two friends that grew up together in the neighbourhood of Kurtuluş, Istanbul, with an Armenian upbringing. Years later, in their thirties, they met again to question the future and provoke change with music, movement, and paper to explore their dreams. A giant paper surface visualizes the process of the story which the dancer Mihran Tomasyan forms into the mountain Ararat throughout the performance. Saro Usta accompanies this transformation with his music. The piece structures around the misunderstandings of the world, humanity, mountains, earth, and the sky.

Through the contextualisation at Biotopia the performance is grounded in Vienna’s second district, a place where scenery and history meet, just as in the fictional neighbourhood of Ararat. Both neighbourhoods are affected by their occupants, a minority in society, and the continuous history of pursuit. In the piece SAR, not only is a biblical myth brought to life, but also the unhidden life during a genocide.

The dancer Mihran Tomasyan is cofounder of the 'Çıplak Ayaklar Kumpanyası' (Barefoot-company). His works, amongst other things, also engage with themes such as Armenian identity and create an active interest in forms of discussion.

Saro Usta is part of the Istanbul based music band Vomank that are inspired by traditional Armenian music and interpret this into an alternative sound.

Laura Unger is a freelance choreographer.
